Project Stories
At South Park Sewing Studio, we have worked on everything from lace to backpacks and everything in between.
As you might expect, in these years of experience we have worked on some particularly interesting and complex pieces, and some that are just plain fun! Below you can find descriptions of memorable projects from each of our senior sewists.
Before
This 100 year old dress was in very good shape, aside from slight yellowing and one obvious rust stain. It was also quite small for even a modern petite body.
After
Three soaks in a restoration solution brightened it and totally removed the rust spot. We then detached the bodice to replace the fragile English netting underneath. The top of the skirt was cut off, vintage lace was added to the bottom hem, making the skirt slightly larger as needed. The bodice was enlarged by applying more lace. A refurbished heirloom!
Custom Costume Developed for a Steampunk Convention
This costume (on the right) was created from the reference image on the left. It is from the video game Bioshock Infinite. This was a challenge because there was no pattern to use, only images from the game. It was a fun project and turned out perfectly.
Before
A 1980's I. Magnin bolero jacket with yellowing sequins was transformed into a fur-trimmed capelet.
After
A very rewarding project. A stunning client wore it with a custom navy shantung ballgown. When she walked in, the room went silent.....
A client's blazer collar started splitting and peeling due to extreme heat. We replaced it with soft leather. Better than new!
Custom Holiday Costume
This is the concept sketch for this project. A custom holiday costume created for a multi-talented client, Cocoa Cris Cringle!
These are the Santa shorts portion of the costume. We had to consider material type and weight for durability and breathability.
A Full Garment Reconstruction
Deconstruction Stage
A client's favorite, well-worn Navy Surplus anorak was deconstructed and made exactly to the customer's preferences.
Finished Piece
We used Ultrex 3 ply from Seattle Fabrics and sealed all of the seams with waterproof tape.
